Newport Beach Water Quality: What's Really in Your Tap Water

Most of Newport Beach is served by the city's own water utility, which blends about 80% local groundwater from the Orange County basin, pumped from four wells in Fountain Valley, with about 20% imported water from the Metropolitan Water District. Some areas are served by Irvine Ranch Water District or Mesa Water District. The water meets state and federal standards, but the groundwater is hard, and EWG lists 16 contaminants above its stricter health guidelines, including arsenic, chromium-6, nitrate, PFAS and uranium.

All results were below state and federal legal limits; EWG health guidelines are stricter, health-based goals. Contaminants marked for the RO faucet are reduced in your drinking and cooking water at the kitchen sink.

Softening and soap savings

Hard Water Savings Calculator for Newport Beach Households

Hard water quietly costs you money on energy, appliances, fixtures, plumbing and soap, and bottled water adds up fast. Here's what an average Newport Beach household on hard water can expect to save with our complete system, based on independent studies.

Pick your household size to update the estimates.

Lower Water Heater Bills

$100/year
The research

Battelle: tank water heaters lose about 4% efficiency for every 5 grains of hardness. Soft water also lets you wash in cold water.

Longer-Lasting Appliances

$90/year
The research

Water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines last longer without scale. In Battelle tests, tankless heaters failed from scale in 1.6 years of use on 26 gpg water.

Clear Faucets and Showerheads

$50/year
The research

Battelle: showerheads on hard water lost 75% of their flow in under 18 months of use.

Fewer Plumbing Repairs

$60/year
The research

Less scale inside pipes, valves and toilet parts means fewer repair calls and descaling jobs.

Half the Soap and Detergent

$150/year
The research

WQRF study: soft water cut laundry detergent by 50% and dishwasher detergent by 50% or more in very hard water.

No More Bottled Water

$250/year
The research

Americans drink 47.3 gallons of bottled water per person each year. Your included 8-stage RO faucet replaces it with purified water from the tap.

What a Newport Beach Home Spends vs. Saves, Year by Year

The blue line is everything you spend: the $3,399 system plus salt and RO filters every year. The green bars are what you save. Once the bars pass the line, the system has paid for itself.

Saved by year 20
$14,000
Spent, incl. upkeep
$6,399
Money in your pocket
$7,601
Pays for itself
Year 6

Tap any year on the chart to see its numbers. Upkeep uses about $70 a year in softener salt for a 3 to 4 person home and about $80 a year in RO filters.

How we estimate this: averages for a household on about 20 gpg water, before price increases. Energy uses Battelle's finding of about 4% water heater efficiency loss per 5 gpg plus cold-water washing. Appliance and fixture figures spread replacement costs over shorter lifespans on hard water. Soap figures use WQRF's 50% detergent reduction for laundry and dishes. Bottled water uses 47.3 gallons per person per year at about $1.50 per gallon for bulk cases, replaced by the included reverse osmosis faucet. Figures are gross savings and do not include softener salt or RO filter replacement costs. Your actual savings depend on your home, water use, appliances and local rates. Newport Beach FAQs

Newport Beach Water Questions, Answered Locally

Is Newport Beach water hard?

Yes. The city's 2024 Annual Water Quality Report shows its groundwater averaging 225 mg/L of hardness, about 13 grains per gallon, with readings from 2.8 up to 24 grains per gallon. Imported water averaged 160 mg/L, about 9.4 grains per gallon. That's hard to very hard, and your free test shows the level at your tap.

Where does Newport Beach's water come from?

About 80% is local groundwater from the Orange County basin, pumped from four city wells in Fountain Valley, and about 20% is imported Colorado River and State Water Project water from the Metropolitan Water District. Some neighborhoods are served by Irvine Ranch Water District or Mesa Water District instead, so check your water bill.

Does Newport Beach water have chlorine or chloramine?

Both. The city adds chlorine at the source, and the imported water it buys is treated with chloramine, a mix of chlorine and ammonia. Our catalytic carbon removes both at every tap.

What contaminants are in Newport Beach tap water?

EWG's Tap Water Database lists 16 contaminants above its health guidelines for the City of Newport Beach, including arsenic, chromium-6, nitrate, PFHxS, uranium and disinfection byproducts. All were below legal limits. The city's own 2025 report shows arsenic averaging 2.1 ppb against a 10 ppb legal limit.

Does Newport Beach water have PFAS?

EWG lists PFHxS, one of the PFAS chemicals, above its health guideline for the city's water, at levels below current legal limits. Catalytic carbon and reverse osmosis both reduce PFAS.

I live on Balboa Island with a small garage. Will a system fit?

Usually, yes. Compact systems fit in most tight garages and utility closets. Where space or a drain is limited, a salt-free conditioner or an under-sink RO faucet can be the better fit, and we'll show you options at your free test.

Which areas near Newport Beach do you serve?

All of Newport Beach and Corona del Mar, plus Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine and Laguna Beach, and down the coast to San Clemente.

What does water treatment cost for a Newport Beach home?

Our Mixed Bed Water Softener with Catalytic Carbon + 8-Stage Reverse Osmosis is $3,399 installed during our 40% off offer, down from $5,665, or from $60 a month with financing on approved credit. Your exact price is confirmed in writing after your free water test.
