Soap figures use WQRF's 50% detergent reduction for laundry and dishes. Bottled water uses 47.3 gallons per person per year at about $1.50 per gallon for bulk cases, replaced by the included reverse osmosis faucet. Is Los Angeles water hard?

It depends on your neighborhood. LADWP's monitoring tables show Los Angeles Aqueduct water serving much of the Valley, Western and Central LA at about 103 mg/L, roughly 6 grains per gallon. Local groundwater runs about 230 mg/L, and MWD water serving the Harbor and Eastern LA about 279 mg/L, roughly 16 grains per gallon. Your free test shows what's coming out of your tap.

Where does LA's tap water come from?

LADWP blends three sources: the Los Angeles Aqueduct from the Eastern Sierra, treated at the Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant; local groundwater from the San Fernando Valley and Central basins; and Colorado River and State Water Project water from the Metropolitan Water District. The mix changes by neighborhood and by year.

Why does my water seem different from a friend's across town?

Because it often is. A home on mostly Aqueduct water can be about 6 grains per gallon with around 300 ppm of dissolved solids, while the Harbor area on MWD water can be about 16 grains per gallon and over 600 ppm. That's why we test your water before recommending anything.

Does LA water have chlorine or chloramine?

LADWP disinfects with chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia that lasts longer in the pipes. It's harder to remove than chlorine, which is why our systems use catalytic carbon.

What contaminants are in Los Angeles tap water?

EWG's Tap Water Database lists 9 contaminants above its health guidelines for LADWP: arsenic, bromate, chromium-6, nitrate, nitrate and nitrite, uranium, TTHMs and two groups of haloacetic acids. All were below legal limits, but EWG's guidelines are stricter health-based goals.
